SOCIAL ISSUE
Anjuthengu is a coastal panchayath and town in the Thiruvananthapuram District of Kerala. It is the coastal area of Arabian sea which is densely populated with people belonging to all age groups. Most of them are fishermen. Major issue of the Anjengo community is the lack of awareness on education and professional quality
Some of the social issues that the Anjengo Community are :
We came to observe that there are a large number of school drop-outs due to lack of family support and less importance for education
Those children who are interested to pursue their higher education or graduation are not given any guidance like when or where to apply for a course, which course suits them better etc...
No help is provided to the children who wish to appear for any entrance examinations for their higher studies.
There is no awareness among the people regarding their opportunities in getting jobs through competitive exams like PSC.
Since many of the people of the community are fishermen, their living standard and financial stability is very poor. And mostly men are the only income source of the family. This reduced the confidence of the women.
PROPOSED SOLUTION
Giving proper orientation and guidance for the students in their school level itself, we hope to solve many of the issues to an extent.
One major thing through which we can bring development to the community is by giving awareness to the parents of children in pursuing their education and promoting them to attain a sustainable job.
We can assist the children by giving proper career guidance classes and giving them proper directions to get admission to their dream course.
Providing assistance to those in need of entrance preparation for their higher studies. We can help them in their registration procedures and further procedures to enrol in the best institutions.
Conducting a PSC registration campaign and giving them directions for appearing in for the competitive exams. Thereby we can ensure that many of them from the community get jobs.
We can make sure gender equality and women empowerment if women starts to earn, and they become financially secure. This builds their confidence too!
Information base to have an understanding of scholarship availability and attaining them
CONCERNS
We believe we have the power to make changes in society by using the skills we already have. Since we are MSW Disaster management students, rehabilitation and reinforcement of marginalised sections are our focus areas. The issue in Anjengo is one of our study topics, and we are researching it as a part of our fieldwork. We would like to promote women empowerment in that area through activities such as skill set enhancement programs and diversifying livelihood options to bolster their socio-economic status.
