Journey
Afsal Mohammed B is a social volunteer, consultant and entrepreneur from Kerala, India, for whom volunteering is a way of life.
His journey began as early as 2006, during his school years, when he formed a small team with friends to engage in school-level volunteering activities. These early experiences shaped his understanding of service, responsibility, and community action. In 2015, while pursuing college, he joined the National Service Scheme (NSS), which marked his transition from school-level initiatives to structured, community-based volunteering.
In 2017, during his college years, Afsal founded The Gulmohar Foundation along with his collegemates, initiating grassroots social and environmental actions. The same year, his consistent contribution to digital and community volunteering earned him recognition as the Top Online Volunteer of United Nations Volunteers, India (2017). This period laid the foundation for his long-term vision of scaling volunteerism beyond isolated activities.
Afsal pursued his Bachelor of Technology in Mechanical Production Engineering from TKM College of Engineering, Kollam. His final-year project — “Design and Fabrication of a Plastic Bottle Shredder for Perinad Grama Panchayat” — was part of a larger social initiative titled “The Journey of Awakening for Protecting Life Underwater.” This project went on to win the 5th Millennium Ocean Prize (2019), an international award recognising innovative contributions to ocean conservation.
In 2018, he was selected as a Millennium Fellow under United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) and served as the Deputy General Secretary of the Kerala Forum on UNAI (KFUNAI). During this period, he actively contributed to youth leadership and global citizenship by helping organise three Model United Nations conferences in Kerala. He was also honoured with the iVolunteer Awards in 2018 and 2019, among India’s premier national recognitions for exceptional volunteerism.
In 2019, Afsal was selected as a participant of the Jagriti Yatra, a nationwide entrepreneurship and leadership journey across India, further strengthening his understanding of grassroots leadership, social entrepreneurship, and systemic change.
Building on more than a decade of hands-on experience, Afsal founded Captains Social Foundation in 2021, independently, with a renewed focus on building socially responsible citizens through volunteering. Captains was envisioned as a platform to make volunteering simple, accessible, and meaningful, especially for young people.
Over the past 20+ years, Afsal has engaged 100,000+ young people across India and led numerous initiatives aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). His vision is to build a strong, inclusive network of volunteers who can be the change and emerge as socially responsible changemakers within their own communities.
His work has received wide national and international recognition. He was recognised as the Green Guardian of India 2024 by UNICEF YuWaah India for his contributions to climate action and received a special mention at the Volunteer Hero of India 2024. He was invited by the President of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Youth to attend the UN ECOSOC Youth Forum 2023, and was selected to participate in the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) 2023 at the United Nations Headquarters, New York.
As part of his continued learning and contribution to the volunteer ecosystem, Afsal undertook an “Experimental Volunteering Journey” across India, travelling independently to meet, appreciate, and document the efforts of grassroots volunteers. Through this journey, he has travelled across 20+ Indian states, celebrating everyday changemakers and strengthening India’s culture of volunteerism. These experiences led him to author a Malayalam book titled “മനുഷ്യരിലേക്ക്! – A Journey by captainafsal”, and a practical handbook, “An Introduction to Volunteerism in India.”
Looking ahead, Afsal’s dream initiative is to establish a dedicated Centre for Volunteering - an institute envisioned to promote volunteering, volunteer skill and capacity building, and SDG-driven social action. The centre aims to connect volunteers with meaningful social opportunities and communities, offer structured learning pathways in volunteerism, and redefine volunteering as a journey of service, self-discovery, and social leadership
